It’s week 2 of our 7 month adventure around Sout

It’s week 2 of our 7 month adventure around South America, which we spent in the colorful mountain town of Salento, Colombia 🇨🇴 ⁣
⁣
Salento is primarily known as being home to the Cocora Valley, which is one of the only places on the planet where you can find wax palm trees 🌴. Growing up to 200 feet tall, this is actually the tallest palm tree in the world and the second tallest species of trees (only beaten out by the mighty Redwood!) 🤯⁣
⁣
The Cocora Valley is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever hiked 🥾, with horses and cows dotting its impossibly green hills, moody clouds, and the enormous wax palm trees, towering overhead. ⁣
⁣
But there’s a lot more in Salento to explore beyond the Cocora Valley, like: ⁣
⁣
☕️ Coffee! Salento is in the heart of the coffee-growing region of Colombia, the world’s second largest producer of the drink we’re so fond of. Finca Arzacia is an organic, family-run farm that offers excellent tours, where you, of course, get to try some of their delicious coffee - highly recommend!⁣
⁣
💥Tejo! One of the things I was most excited about trying in Colombia is the traditional game of tejo, which is kind of a mix of cornhole and shotput… but with explosives involved! Nowadays, there’s less places to play tejo around the country, but there’s an awesome hall in Salento, where we had WAY too much fun one night, trying to throw rocks at explosives. 😂⁣

🏠 Downtown Salento is very walkable and so cute, with colorful buildings with overflowing flower boxes that house coffee shops, mom-and-pop restaurants, and small boutiques. ⁣

Christmas in Leavenworth, Washington is straight up magic 🎅🏼⁣⁣

Leavenworth is a teeny Bavarian-themed town, located high in the snowy Cascade Mountains 🏔️, a little over two hours east of Seattle. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Come winter, the town seriously feels STRAIGHT out of a Hallmark movie. The Bavarian buildings in its downtown are festooned with a whopping half a MILLION Christmas lights, with carolers, visits from Santa, and lots of mulled wine to boot🍷⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Leavenworth kicks off its Christmas festivities the day after Thanksgiving, with a daily tree lighting ceremony, carolers, and fun activities, like a gingerbread house competition, going on through Christmas Eve🎄⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Leavenworth actually leaves its decorations up through Valentines Day ❤️- so if you prefer to avoid the crowds (the town receives 200,000 visitors from around the world in December!), consider keeping the Christmas spirit alive and visiting in January of February instead! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
⚠️ To be clear, Leavenworth typically has a Christmas market the weekend after Thanksgiving, but otherwise, does not have one throughout the rest of its festivities. Still, you won’t have ANY trouble finding all the sausages, mulled wine, and handmade gifts at the many shops, restaurants, and vendors, lining its streets. ⁣

How much we spent visiting the Polar Bear Capital

How much we spent visiting the Polar Bear Capital of the World 🐻‍❄️💰⁣
⁣
Visiting Churchill, Manitoba DEFINITELY isn’t cheap- in fact, it’s probably the most expensive place we’ve ever traveled to. 💸⁣
⁣
However, most visitors actually travel to this remote town in northern Canada as part of a group tour, which typically start around $4,500 USD (and can be WAY more expensive) per person, for three days in Churchill- and you CAN visit for way cheaper than that! ⁣
⁣
If you want to see polar bears in the wild for yourself, here’s how you can visit the Polar Bear Capital of the World as affordably as possible: ⁣
⁣
💻 There’s less than 20 accommodations total that you can stay at in Churchill (including Airbnbs, hotels, etc.), so they can kinda charge whatever they want during polar bear season. Book (preferably refundable) lodging WAY in advance to score the best deals- the “cheaper” options go fast! ⁣
⁣
🥑 Bring and make your own food. We ate out once in Churchill and it cost $62 USD for two burgers and fries and two beers 😳 And groceries in Churchill are also super pricey- a head of cauliflower at the grocery store was around $10 USD. So stock up ahead of time! ⁣
⁣
🚆 It sucks a bit but booking economy seats on the 48 hour train from Winnipeg is about a third of the price of a sleeper car and less than 20% the cost of airfare to Churchill. Yes, this means “sleeping” upright for a day or two but at least, you may get a Northern Lights showing to keep you occupied at night! ✨ If you want to cut down on your time on the train (and score even cheaper train tickets), you can drive to the town of Thompson, which is an 8 hour drive north of Winnipeg, but shaves your time on the train down to 16 hours. ⁣
